Speaker: Prof. Edoardo Tortarolo, Ph.D.
Chair: Prof. Dr. Arndt Brendecke (LMU)

Edoardo Tortarolo is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Eastern Piedmont and currently Visiting Fellow at CAS. His research is concerned with the question of what the legacy of the Enlightenment consists of. The post-secular turn and the resurgence of interest-based nationalism have prompted a reconsideration of 18th century religious discourse. Tortarolo focuses on Constantin- François de Chasseboeuf de Volney (1757–1820) and Charles-François Dupuis (1742–1809). Both thinkers were deeply rooted in the French Enlightenment and its secularizing impetus.
